Carved in Stone

Is Stonehenge’s younger, taller sibling an innocent monument or a post-apocalyptic directive?

On a recent trip to North Carolina, I decided to drive through Elberton, Georgia and visit the Georgia Guidestones.  My research revealed a consistent portrait of somewhat sinister intrigue and mystery.

Although I had several options for accommodations, the Samuel Elbert Hotel was my choice.

The small lobby hearkened to the grandeur of a bygone era, but the T-shirt display added a modern touch.

The restaurant was closed and deserted.  Indeed, the dreary pall of Covid-19 seemed to drape the entire place.

After being greeted warmly by Eli, I wasted no time picking his brain for information.  He admitted that he knew very little and that the place was shrouded in secrecy.

My sumptuous room with the high pedestal King bed was sparsely furnished with quiet elegance and I felt truly pampered.

The third floor view of the back alley through the large shaded windows revealed an older, somewhat shabby quarry town.

Although it was drizzling when I arrived, the new day dawned clear and bright.

The small town square was nearly deserted as I dashed around for some pictures, eager to head north to my destination.

Sweet and unsophisticated, this town made up for its size with pride of accomplishment and a playful sense of humor.

…and enough Confederate statues to keep half the liberals in the country busy for a day or two.

At the end of the next block I found the RE/MAX OFFICE  I was looking for.

Although the contractor of the Guidestones project was deceased, his daughter Melissa was a Realtor here.

Sensing my disappointment that Melissa was not there, Tanya, the Realtor on duty, graciously invited me to look around while she attempted to locate her.

I loved the tin ceilings and the brick wall that was exterior at one point.  Such a cool place!

Moving away from the town square, hopscotching back and forth across the main road, I frequently noticed a police cruiser driving past.

Elberton is proclaimed to be the granite capital of the world.

Everywhere there were granite processing plants, museums and etching facilities.

My photographs cannot possibly do justice to these skillfully carved masterpieces.

My plan is to grab some final pictures of Elberton and head north towards the actual Georgia Guidestones structure.

On a side street, I find these massive blocks of granite lined up in stacks like a giant child’s toys.

I am hoping Annie is not in this box…

Engrossed in my work, I hear the soft purr of an engine behind me, and a male voice says “you missed one”.

After a brief lecture on the perils of pulling up onto sidewalks and the such, Officer Curlee and I had a nice chat about the Guidestones and life in general. No bail was involved.

Heading out of town, I retrieved a message from the elusive Melissa.  She was sorry to have missed me, but professed to know nothing more about the mysterious Guidestones than any other local person.  Her father, it appears, took the secret to his grave (her words).

Surrounded by pastures and state parks, I have found the middle of nowhere.  Thank goodness for a  GPS signal.

Up an unpaved, gravel road, with the sweet smell of freshly-baled hay in my nostrils, it appeared.

I’ll admit, after all of the hype and mysterious hyperbole, my first impression of the actual structure was decidedly anti-climactic.

The stones flaunt the  visionary, ambiguous, and somewhat  inflammatory message in eight languages.

Notice the “mail slot” and hole in the center column?

Stand at the west side of it, and you will see the sunrise over the horizon during an equinox or solstice.

The hole is drilled at an angle from one side to the other, through which can be seen the North Star.

Sunlight shines through the 7/8″hole drilled through the capstone onto the face of the gnomon stone (sundial) at noon.

Locate Polaris, the North Star through the eye-level hole on the south side.

I saw no one the entire time I spent here.  It appears I am alone, but am I?  Someone is always watching.

Interesting, that was a nice place you stayed in. Is that place close to where there has been a revival? Forget what the churches name is ,but doing lots of baptisems. Curt Landry had the pastor on his web site.

Thank you for the trip my sister. I love your beautiful writing style that brings everything to life as you take the reader along on your journey!

As for the Guidestones, it’s the declaration (manifesto) of what those who worship the enemy plan to do after the rapture.

Sad that their deception will lead them to a fiery doom forever! Even so, Come, Lord Jesus! Amen.
